Written Answers. - School Accommodation.

Deputy David Stanton asked the Minister for Education and Science, further to Parliamentary Question No. 309 of 24 June 2008, the progress he has made in relation to the provision of primary school places in Youghal, County Cork; if the forward planning section has completed its examination of schools and identified the locations at which significant accommodation is required at primary schools in Youghal; if decisions have been made as a result; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [23151/09]

Deputy Batt O’Keeffe: My Department provided devolved funding in 2008 for an extension project at a school in the Youghal area. The progression of other projects in this area will be considered in the context of my Department’s multi-annual School Building and Modernisation Programme.

Forward Planning Section of the Department is continuing the process of identifying the areas where significant additional accommodation will be required at primary and post-primary level for the coming years. Factors under consideration include population growth, demographic trends, current and projected enrolments, recent and planned housing developments and capacity of existing schools to meet demand for places. Having considered these factors decisions will be taken on the means by which emerging needs will be met within an area. [555] Educational accommodation requirements in the Youghal area will be fully considered in this context and it is expected that this examination will be completed in coming months.
