Deputy Bernard Allen Deputy Bernard Allen
Deputy Bernard Allen asked the Minister for Health and Children the reason a person (details supplied) in County Cork has been waiting so long to have cataract surgery, in view of the fact that the surgery was to have been carried out some time ago but has been deferred on a number of occasions; and the reason they have not been referred to the National Treatment Purchase Fund for surgery in view of the fact that they have been waiting so long. [37631/08]
Deputy Mary Harney Deputy Mary Harney
Deputy Mary Harney: The management of waiting lists generally is a matter for the Health Service Executive and the individual hospitals concerned. Therefore, the Executive is the appropriate body to consider the particular case raised by the Deputy. My Department has requested the Parliamentary Affairs Division of the Executive to arrange to have the case investigated and to reply directly to the Deputy.
Patients waiting more than three months on a surgical waiting list may qualify for treatment under the National Treatment Purchase Fund. It is open to the person in question or anyone acting on their behalf to contact the Fund directly in relation to their case.
