Written Answers. - Research Vessels.

[297]   359. Mr. Ring asked the Minister for Communications, Marine and Natural Resources further to Question No. 337 of 4 October 2005, the cost of each vessel to the Exchequer of the €5,015,471; if there is any of the latter amount recoverable from the European Union or other sources; if, with the shore support of €1,714,094, this includes the cost of input by Marine Institute staff; and the sources of that funding. [7072/06]

[298]   Mr. Browne: The running costs, including shore technical support costs and overheads such as insurance etc., for both vessels, as set out in the reply to the Deputy of 4 October 2005, were met from the Exchequer grant-in-aid to the Marine Institute. However, of the costs of €5,015,471 — 2004 operating costs — the following amounts were offset from EU sources:

Celtic Explorer

Celtic Voyager

840,000

150,000

Furthermore, the following income was recovered from sources other than the Marine Institute Exchequer Vote:

The shore support of €1,714,094 does not include the cost of input by Marine Institute staff. The costs of shore support are met through a combination of Exchequer funding and the funding detailed above.
