An Ceann Comhairle An Ceann Comhairle An Ceann Comhairle: Before coming to the Order of Business I propose to deal with a number of notices under Standing Order 31. Mr. Allen Mr. Allen 1073 Mr. Allen: I seek the adjournment of the Dáil under Standing Order 31 to raise a matter of national importance, namely, to debate the Government’s failure to deliver on its promise, a promise made by the former Minister for Transport, Deputy Brennan, that an independent Cork Airport Authority would commence its operations debt free and that the full cost of the new [1073] airport terminal would not have to be borne by that authority. Mr. Crowe Mr. Crowe Mr. Crowe: I seek the adjournment of the Dáil under Standing Order 31 to raise a matter of national importance, namely, the ongoing crisis in accident and emergency units where, according to the Irish Nurses Organisation, there are more than 300 people on trolleys, in particular in Tallaght hospital where a man suffering from acute asthma and emphysema who needs complete rest and quiet was left on a trolley in a corridor for seven days. Mr. Sherlock Mr. Sherlock Mr. Sherlock: I seek the adjournment of the Dáil under Standing Order 31 to raise a matter of national importance, namely, the need for the Minister for Agriculture and Food to confirm whether beet growers and the Irish sugar industry will be liable for a €25 million restructuring levy in 2006 and to report on the outcome of her recent meeting with European Commissioner Mariann Fischer Boel. In view of the importance of this issue, I hope the Ceann Comhairle will agree to my request. Mr. F. McGrath Mr. F. McGrath Mr. F. McGrath: I seek the adjournment of the Dáil under Standing Order 31 to raise a matter of national importance, namely, that a fresh inquiry be held with regard to new evidence on the Stardust fire tragedy in Artane on St. Valentine’s Day, February 1981, and to give the families and victims the maximum support on this matter. Mr. Morgan Mr. Morgan Mr. Morgan: I seek the adjournment of the Dáil under Standing Order 31 to raise a matter of national importance, namely, to afford the Taoiseach an opportunity to explain to the House his reasons for refusing to meet the family of British murder squad victim Seamus Ludlow, an explanation which the family urgently needs and deserves, given the Taoiseach has met the McCartney family and the family of Billy Wright and others; and to enable the Members of this House to impress upon the Taoiseach the necessity for him to meet the Ludlow family. I am glad to hear the Taoiseach is well disposed towards such meetings. Mr. Broughan Mr. Broughan 1074 Mr. Broughan: I seek the adjournment of the Dáil under Standing Order 31 to raise a matter of national importance, namely, to ask the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform in light of the emergence of new information to immediately ask the Garda national bureau of criminal investigation to conduct a new investigation into the Stardust disaster of 14 February 1981 which resulted in the tragic deaths of 48 young people; to establish a new commission of inquiry on the [1074] matter to finally determine the causes of the Stardust tragedy and to bring some measure of justice and closure for the long-suffering victims and their families as requested over a number of years by the Stardust victims’ committee; and if he will take urgent action on the matter. Breen: I seek the adjournment of the Dáil under Standing Order 31 to raise a matter of national importance, namely, that the Minister for Health and Children immediately review her policy on implementing the capital development programme at Ennis General Hospital in view of the critical situation that prevails at the hospital with regard to the lack of beds and general overcrowding. Mr. Healy Mr. Healy Mr. Healy: I seek the adjournment of the Dáil under Standing Order 31 to raise a matter of national importance, namely, the need for the Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment to remove the capping on community employment schemes. This capping involves the sacking of community employment supervisors and participants, destroying the schemes and depriving local communities in towns and villages of excellent work and services. These schemes are being deliberately destroyed and I ask the Minister to make a statement on the matter. 5 o’clock Mr. Sargent Mr. Sargent Mr. Sargent: I ask that Dáil Eireann be adjourned under Standing Order 31 to raise a matter of national importance, namely, the need to investigate the failure of Government to put in place the level of fire prevention inspections needed to prevent another Stardust-type tragedy, according to experts in fire prevention; the need to at least double the existing 1985 number of 11 Dublin Fire Brigade ambulances; the need to increase hospital bed capacity, which is so bad that more than 300 patients have been on accident and emergency trolleys every day this month; and for the Taoiseach to state when he will meet the relatives of the Stardust victims to hear the evidence they now have about how their loved ones died and what needs to happen.
