Written Answers - Asylum Support Services.

  329. Mr. Cuffe asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform if his Department is [539] responsible for the payment of direct provision allowances; if there is a unit with responsibility for the payment and for the welfare needs of persons living in direct provision. [33336/04]

Mr. McDowell:The Reception and Integration Agency, which operates under the aegis of my Department, is responsible for the provision of accommodation and ancillary services to asylum seekers. In addition, the agency has a co-ordinating role in relation to the provision of services to asylum seekers by other agencies and Departments, including the Department of Social and Family Affairs.

Direct provision allowances and other welfare payments to asylum seekers are made locally by community welfare officers operating under the aegis of the Department of Social and Family Affairs.
