182. Ms B. Moynihan-Cronin asked the Minister for Education and Science if a second education welfare officer will be provided for County Kerry; if her attention has been drawn to the need for such a person; the number of referrals to the Education Welfare Board from Kerry in 2003 and to date in 2004; and if she will make a statement on the matter. Ms Hanafin: My Department recently conveyed approval to the National Educational Welfare Board for the recruitment of an additional ten educational welfare service delivery staff. Decisions relating to the assignment of staff to specific areas are a matter for the board, which is an independent statutory agency.
The issues raised by the Deputy are matters for the National Educational Welfare Board, which was established under the Education (Welfare) Act 2000 as the single national body with responsibility for school attendance. I am arranging to pass the Deputy’s query to the NEWB for direct reply to her.
