  472. Mr. Sargent asked the Minister for the Environment, Heritage and Local Government the cost of paying staff at the polling stations in the 1999 local and European elections and referendum; and the cost of paying staff at the count centres. [4577/04]

  Mr. Cullen: Staff costs incurred in relation to the holding of a national election or referendum are recouped to returning officers from the Central Fund by the Department of Finance. Details of the costs referred to are not available in my Department. The specific costs related to local elections are matters for the local authorities concerned and are not available at central level.
