Mr. Durkan asked the Minister for Foreign Affairs Ireland's future role in European defence and security matters; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [10261/03] Mr. Cowen Mr. Cowen Minister for Foreign Affairs (Mr. Cowen): I refer the Deputy to my reply to Question No. 277 of 11 March 2003. 254 Ireland's future role in European defence and security matters will continue to be brought forward within the framework of European Security and Defence Policy – ESDP – as established under the Treaty of Amsterdam and in accord[254] ance with the conclusions of successive European Council meetings. Ireland has already played an active role in the development of ESDP, while at the same time respecting our traditions and values and remaining in full conformity with our traditional policy of military neutrality. Co-operation with other EU member states, particularly the other neutral and non-aligned countries, has proved important in this regard. This approach will continue to apply in the future, as will our attachment to the primary role of the United Nations Security Council in matters of international peace and security.
