Mr. Durkan asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform the total number of applicants who have passed the Garda entrance exam; the number to date called for training; the number still awaiting for such a call; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [24039/02] Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform (Mr. McDowell) Michael McDowell Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform (Mr. McDowell): Recruitment to the Garda Síochána is governed by the provisions of the Garda Síochána (Admissions and Appointments) Regulations, 1988. An open competition is conducted by the Civil Service and Local Appointments Commissioners. The CSLAC has informed me that approximately 2,500 persons passed the written test in this year's Garda recruitment competition and 860 have been called for interview to date. I have been informed by the Garda authorities that 125 persons have been called for training from the 2002 Garda recruitment competition to date. The CSLAC conducted the interviews for Garda trainee and successful applicants have been notified. In addition, 15 persons have passed the medical examination and are due to be called for the position of Garda trainee. Another 15 will be soon be called for a medical examination.
