Ms Shortall asked the Minister for Education and Science the number of undergraduate first-year students registered in each university and institute of technology in each academic year from 1996-97 up to 2002; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [8638/02] Dr. Woods Dr. Woods Minister for Education and Science (Dr. Woods): The information requested by the Deputy is set out in the following table. The growth in numbers of entrants to full-time undergraduate courses at third level signifies a continuing high demand for third level education. In keeping with this Government's objectives to increase levels of participation in education generally, I will continue to provide for increased numbers attending third level both in the university and institute of technology sectors and with a focus on addressing socio-economic disadvantage and access by mature students. Number of undergraduate first-year students registered in each university and institute of technology in the academic years 1996-97 to 2000-01:
