Minister for Arts, Heritage, Gaeltacht and the Islands (Miss de Valera): Visitor access to the building is being reorganised with a new reception desk and waiting area being proposed for the basement of the building. These measures, which should be in place by the start of the next season, are designed to aid the flow of visitors through this important site. Over the last year the furniture in the Casino has been re-evaluated and only period furniture or other material directly linked with the building is now being displayed there.
Design and construction of secure accommodation for guides, security personnel and grounds maintenance equipment and the completion of security works at the entrance is also proposed. A brief for this project has been referred to the Office of Public Works for execution.
My Department is committed to the proper implementation of fire and emergency procedures which fully comply with the Fire Service Act, 1981, and any other relevant health and safety legislation. These include drawing up of comprehensive guidelines, training programmes and regular monthly and annual statutory inspections. A number of measures are in place in relation to fire safety, which include a 24 hour monitored fire alarm; a 24 hour security at the entrance point; access into the building is by guided tour only; and fire safety training courses for security and guide staff.
