283. Mr. G. Mitchell asked the Minister for Education and Science the number of applications received for the NUI diploma in art teaching; the number of applicants who had previously attempted to qualify as art teachers through the Department of Education's technical schools system of art teacher training run by his Department until 1988; and if he will make a statement on the matter. Minister for Education and Science (Dr. Woods): The National College of Art and Design has received 53 applications for the NUI Diploma in Art Teaching. The statistics sought by the Deputy on the number of applicants who had previously attempted to qualify as art teachers through my Department's system of art teacher training are not readily available. I have asked officials in my Department to compile these figures and I will supply them to the Deputy as soon as they are available.
