414. Mr. Browne (Carlow-Kilkenny) asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform the number of gardaí serving in Carlow town; and if he has satisfied himself that this number is adequate in view of the increase in the population in recent times. [23136/01]

Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform (Mr. O'Donoghue): I am informed by the Garda authorities, who are responsible for the detailed allocation of personnel and resources to individual areas, that the personnel strength – all ranks – of Carlow Garda station as at 31 December for each of the last four years and currently is as follows:

1997

40

1998

45

1999

44

2000

46

5/10/2001

47

These figures represent an increase of seven, or 17.5% in the personnel allocated to Carlow garda [1267] station since 31 December 1997. I am further informed by the Garda authorities that garda personnel assigned to Carlow Garda station is constantly monitored and reviewed. Such monitoring ensures that optimum use is made of Garda resources and the best possible Garda service is provided to the general public. The situation will be kept under review and when additional personnel next becomes available the needs of Carlow will be fully considered within the overall context of the needs of Garda districts throughout the country.
