157. Mr. McCormack asked the Minister for the Marine and Natural Resources the position [1248] regarding the proposed development works at Kilkierran Pier, Connemara, County Galway; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [17142/01]

Minister for the Marine and Natural Resources (Mr. Fahey): Kilkierran Pier, Connemara is [1249] owned by Galway County Council and responsibility for its repair and maintenance rests with the local authority in the first instance.

As the pier is located in a Gaeltacht area the question of funding development works at the pier is a matter for my colleague, the Minister for Arts, Heritage, Gaeltacht and the Islands. I understand that Galway County Council has engaged consultants on behalf of the Department of Arts, Heritage, Gaeltacht and the Islands to carry out a feasibility study on the development of the pier.
