90. Mr. Creed asked the Minister for Defence the current height requirement for females seeking entry into the Defence Forces; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [13701/01]

Minister for Defence (Mr. M. Smith): The current minimum height requirements for entry of females to the Defence Forces is 162.5 cm 5 ft 4 ins. Height requirements in the Defence Forces are necessary because it has been the experience of training units that persons of shorter stature have difficulty carrying the bulk and weight of combat order equipment.

A review of entry requirements to the Defence Forces including height requirements is being undertaken by the Chief of Staff.
