[611] 42. Mr. Allen asked the Minister for Public Enterprise when a decision on giving Bord Gáis Éireann clearance to build a second interconnector to Scotland will be made. [6123/01]

Minister of State at the Department of Public Enterprise (Mr. Jacob): I am happy to inform the Deputy that at its meeting of 27 February last, the Government decided that Bord Gáis Éireann should proceed with its proposal for a second natural gas interconnector between Scotland and Ireland. The project, which is scheduled to be completed by winter 2002, will ensure that there is sufficient capacity in place to meet the rapidly growing demand for gas identified in the latest ESRI energy demand forecasts.
