Written Answers. - Habitats Directive.

205. Mr. U. Burke asked the Minister for Arts, Heritage, Gaeltacht and the Islands if a derogation under the habitats directive was sought by Ireland for turf cutters similar to derogations successfully sought and granted to Italy and Greece for tobacco growing because it impinged on their economy and the livelihoods of its people. Minister for Arts, Heritage, Gaeltacht and the Islands (Miss de Valera): Greece and Italy neither sought nor received a derogation from the full implementation of the EU Habitats Directive. Accordingly, the question does not arise.
