Dáil Éireann - Volume 528 - 14 December, 2000 Written Answers. - Genealogical Service. Mr. Gilmore Mr. Gilmore 198. Mr. Gilmore asked the Minister for Arts, Heritage, Gaeltacht and the Islands if she has considered the case for the introduction of an Irish Genealogy and Heraldry Bill, particularly with a view to preventing the misuse or sale of titles such as Chieftain or Mor; if the Government has on any occasion been asked to give its consent to the conferring of such titles; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [30222/00] Miss de Valera Miss de Valera Minister for Arts, Heritage, Gaeltacht and the Islands (Miss de Valera): I intend to establish a committee of experts in the immediate future to carry out a comprehensive review of the procedures introduced in the 1940's whereby “courtesy recognition” of chiefs of the name is granted by the Genealogical Office. Such “courtesy recognition” does not require the consent of Government. Any question of legislation or other action on the matter should properly await the outcome of that review.
