Written Answers. - Loran-C Mast.

136. Mr. Spring asked the Minister for the Marine and Natural Resources the plans he has for the selection of a site for the relocation of the Loran-C Mast; and if he will outline details of any meetings he has had in relation to other possible locations. [27424/00]

[1455] Minister for the Marine and Natural Resources (Mr. Fahey): Following my reply to a previous question on 10 May 2000, I was approached by a number of coastal communities who expressed an interest in having the project sited at their locations. I am having these expressions of interest investigated at present from a number of viewpoints including technical feasibility, planning etc. but it is too early at this stage to say whether either of them can be proceeded with. I personally have had no meetings to date with any interests in relation to alternative locations.

I can further inform the Deputy that investigations to establish whether a lower mast or a mast with reduced power would meet the technical specifications required have recently been concluded and have indicated that such a solution would not be acceptable.
