Mr. O'Shea asked the Minister for Education and Science if he will appoint a Waterford person to the Further Education and Training Awards Council; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [18912/00] Dr. Woods Dr. Woods Minister for Education and Science (Dr. Woods): I propose to take Questions Nos. 241, 262 and 263 together. In January last, the setting up of a designate National Qualifications Authority of Ireland was announced and Mr. Richard Langford was appointed as chairperson. The new authority is being set up on an interim basis pending its establishment on a statutory basis. The task of the designate authority will be to commence work on the establishment of a national framework of qualifications and to advise on and support the transition to the new certification system as provided for in the Qualifications (Education and Training) Act. It is in this context that the future establishment of the Further Education and Training Awards Council must be seen. Under the provisions of the Act, the Further Education and Training Awards Council will have 18 members. The priority in nominating persons to the council is for those persons to have the necessary expertise and breadth of experience in the further education and training area to enable them to fully contribute to the achievement of the objects of the Act.
