143. Mr. Allen asked the Minister for Health and Children the discussions which took place with the European Commission before a decision was made to limit St. John's Wort to prescription only status. [16328/00]

Minister for Health and Children (Mr. Martin): The decision to limit St. John's Wort to prescription-only status was taken on the recommendation of the Irish Medicines Board and in the interest of protecting public health. No discussions took place with the European Commission in the matter before the decision was taken.
