176. Mr. U. Burke asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform the completion date for refurbishment works at Loughrea Garda station; the costs of the works to be carried out; the additional facilities provided in the station; if any new functions on a regional or local basis will be centred at the station; and if he will make a statement on the matter. Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform (Mr. O'Donoghue): A major restructuring and renovation project at Loughrea Garda station, costing approximately £950,000, is nearing completion.

The works entail incorporating the adjoining married quarters to the existing station, constructing a three storey extension to the rear and an additional storey to the side of the premises. An oil-fired central heating system is being installed and the entire electrical system is being upgraded. New garages and stores are being pro[253] vided at the rear of the station, together with a vehicle compound and car park.

I am informed by the Garda authorities that there are no plans, at present, to centre new functions at this station.
