Written Answers. - Fire Training.

302. Mrs. T. Ahearn asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government the proposals, if any, he has to establish a regional fire training unit; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [10701/00]

Minister for the Environment and Local Government (Mr. Dempsey): Training for fire service personnel is a statutory duty of individual fire authorities. The Fire Services Council also has a central training programme which complements and supplements the local training programmes of fire authorities. Major training facilities for the fire services have been provided at several centres around the country, usually in association with fire station redevelopment. In addition, fire authorities also avail of specialist training provided in other jurisdictions. While the appropriate structures and facilities for fire service training are kept under review, I am satisfied that the approach currently adopted best meets the needs of the service.
