86. Mr. Power asked the Minister for Defence the number of United Nations missions in which the Defence Forces have participated; the number of members killed while serving overseas; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [16994/99]

Minister for Defence (Mr. M. Smith): Defence Forces personnel have participated in a total of 34 United Nations missions to date. A total of 76 members of the Defence Forces have died while serving with these missions. Thirty six of these personnel were killed or fatally wounded as a direct result of a hostile action or act, perpetrated by an enemy, opposing armed force, hostile belligerent or other party. In addition, one soldier, who was serving with UNIFIL, has been missing in action since 1981.
