66. Mr. Gilmore asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government the proposals, if any, he has to give constitutional recognition to local government; when the planned constitutional amendment will be published; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [10819/99]

Minister for the Environment and Local Government (Mr. Dempsey): As already announced a referendum will be held on 11 June to accord constitutional recognition to local government and which will also include provision for periodic elections to local authorities. I propose to publish the necessary Bill this week.
