Dáil Éireann - Volume 502 - 11 March, 1999

Written Answers. - School Staffing.

114. Mr. Kenny asked the Minister for Education and Science if his attention has been drawn to the difficulties (details supplied) being experienced by the board of management of Burriscarra national school, Carnacon, Ballyglass, Claremorris, County Mayo; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [7425/99]

Minister for Education and Science (Mr. Martin): The staffing of a national school for a particular year is determined by the enrolment of the school on 30 September of the previous year. The enrolment at Burriscarra national school on 30 September 1997 was 56 pupils resulting in the school's current staffing of a principal and two assistant teachers. Additionally, the school has the services of a remedial teacher.

The staffing allocations for primary schools for the 1999-2000 school year are in the process of being finalised. However, in light of this school's decline in enrolment to 51 pupils in September 1998, it is unlikely that the school will retain its second assistant's post in the 1999-2000 school year.

When the staffing arrangements for the 1999/2000 school year are finally determined, I have asked my officials to review the school's entitlement and thereafter to correspond with the school's managerial authorities directly in the matter.
