Written Answers. - Urban Renewal Schemes.

152. Mr. Browne (Wexford) asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government the reason the Maudlintown area of Wexford was excluded from the second urban renewal announcement in spite of the fact that it met all the requirements under social housing; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [5386/99]

Minister of State at the Department of the Environment and Local Government (Mr. Molloy): Under the new urban renewal scheme, cases for designation were considered on the basis of integrated area plans, IAPs, prepared by county councils and county borough corporations which address not only issues of physical development, but also cover wider issues of local socio-economic benefit. Wexford County Council submitted IAPs in respect of Gorey and New Ross. While it did not submit an IAP for Wexford town on this occasion, the Council, however, asked for an extension of the time period to the current scheme in both Wexford town and Enniscorthy. The Minister for Finance granted a limited time extension to the end of last year to allow for completion of developments in all areas designated under the previous urban renewal scheme, while a further time extension – to the end of April 1999 – for residential development is also being provided for.
