134. Mr. Deenihan asked the Minister for Finance the timescale for the completion of the study on the siltation of the River Cashen; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [5384/99]

Minister of State at the Department of Finance (Mr. Cullen): The report on phase II of the Feale/Cashen study was received in November 1998 and placed in the Oireachtas Library on 30 November 1998. One of the recommendations contained in the report was the implementation of an aerial survey of the area. This survey has now been completed. The data compiled during the survey will be processed over a two year period. The two year programme is as follows:

Phase A (2 months)	Calibration of one-dimensional model.
Phase B (3 months)	Generating alternative solutions.
Phase C (3 months)	Carrying out peat rodding survey.
Phase D (4 months)	Processing remotely sensed data.
Phase E (4 months)	Scanning, digitizing and ortho-rectifying old catchment maps.
Phase F (4 months)	Constructing land subsidence model.
Phase G (4 months)	Integration of land subsidence model and flooding model of Feale catchment.
Phase H (5 months)	Systems analysis of flooding of lower Feale catchment.
Phase J (6 months)	Full project report.

This work should be completed by the end of the year 2000 when the engineering alternatives for ameliorating flooding in the Cashen/Feale area should be apparent.
