Mr. Quinn Mr. Quinn
604. Mr. Quinn asked the Minister for Health and Children the capital and current spending on health as a percentage of GDP and GNP for each of the years since 1995; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [1986/99]
Mr. Cowen Mr. Cowen
Minister for Health and Children (Mr. Cowen): The following table sets out the information sought by the Deputy:
Public Capital Expenditure.
Gross Public Non-Capital Expenditure.
The current expenditure figures used are taken from the programme breakdown shown as an appendix to the Department's Vote in the Revised Estimates for the Public Service. This has been the source used when calculating health expenditure as a proportion of national income over the years. The 1999 Revised Estimates are currently being finalised and will be published very shortly. This will provide the definitive 1998 outturn figure and the most up to date 1999 estimate. Once these are available I will write to the Deputy providing the relevant GDP and GNP calculations.
The GDP and GNP statistics in the tables above are based on CSO figures up to 1997. In some cases these are preliminary results and subject to revision. The 1998 estimate and 1999 forecast for GDP and GNP are Department of Finance figures as prepared for the 1999 budget.
