475. Mr. C. Lenihan asked the Minister for Finance the plans, if any, he has to review the effectiveness of social spending. [1068/99]

Minister for Finance (Mr. McCreevy): I assure the Deputy that the effectiveness of social spending is reviewed as a matter of course within my Department in the context of the Estimates and budgetary processes. In addition, the progressive implementation of a comprehensive programme of expenditure reviews across Departments, now being established under the Strategic Management Initiative, means that all spending programmes will become the subject of regular evaluation.
