Mr. Broughan asked the Minister for Defence if he has satisfied himself with the funding provided for third level education within the budget of his Department; the number of applications received in each of the years from 1995 to date in this regard; and the number of applicants successful in receiving grants. Smith): All newly commissioned officers are given the opportunity to attend third level education within six to 18 months of being commissioned. Four non-commissioned personnel are also currently attending full time third level education. Funding for third level education for members of the Permanent Defence Force is also available under the refund of fees scheme for personnel who attend college in their own time. Details of the number of applications for funding received and the numbers granted funding in the years 1995 to 1998 are shown in the tabular statement which I propose to circulate in the Official Report.
