Minister for Defence (Mr. M. Smith): In mid-August 1998, following the Government's approval of my proposals for the White Paper on Defence, my Department placed notices in all [469] national daily newspapers inviting submissions on any or all aspects of the White Paper from interested individuals and organisations, with a closing date of 16 October.

To date, a total of 36 submissions have been received in my Department.
