Ryan asked the Minister for Education and Science the proposals, if any, he has to provide in-service training courses in management, personnel management and administration for principals, deputy principals and holders of posts of responsibility at first and second level and for those aspiring to these positions; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [20730/98] Minister for Education and Science (Mr. Martin) Micheál Martin Minister for Education and Science (Mr. Martin): A substantial programme of in-service training in the area of school management has been funded by my Department for principals, deputy principals and holders of posts of responsibility for some time now. This includes the elements of management referred to in the question. In accordance with the policy of devolving in-service provision from the Department, these courses are provided by various agencies, including school management and staff representative bodies. 1317 [1317] My Department will continue to promote and fund a high level of training in the school management area. In addition, my Department will shortly review the programme of courses being provided with a view of increasing their effectiveness. As part of the major programme of in-service training to be provided in the context of the introduction of the revised primary curriculum, school principals and middle-management will be targeted for additional support. While a programme of management training is not specifically provided for those aspiring to management positions, a wide range of in-service courses is available which would increase and develop the skills of such persons in the area of education management.
