Minister for Agriculture and Food (Mr. Walsh) Minister for Agriculture and Food (Mr. Walsh)
Minister for Agriculture and Food (Mr. Walsh): The amount that is expected to be paid directly to farmers in 1998 under the various schemes operated by my Department is of the order of £1 billion. There are approximately 149,000 farms in the country and it is expected that most of these will qualify for one or more payments of a grant, subsidy and-or premia in 1998. Individual farmers may participate in more than one scheme administered by my Department.
