127. Mr. Higgins (Mayo) asked the Minister for Public Enterprise the submission, if any, her Department has made to the EU in relation to [340] funding for the period 2000 to 2004 for the Athlone to Westport to Ballina rail link. [16855/98]

Minister for Public Enterprise (Mrs O'Rourke): Primary responsibility for the preparation of submissions for EU funding lies with the Department of Finance. In response to a request from that Department, my Department made an initial submission in June on EU funding for public transport projects in the post-1999 period. This submission takes account of the CIE review of mainline rail investment needs mentioned in my reply to the Deputy on 3 June 1998, and includes investment proposals for the Athlone to Westport/Ballina lines. The Department of Finance will also be engaging in a consultative process with the regional authorities and social partners before finalising Ireland's submission to the European Commission.
