Written Answers. - Action Against Tobacco Industry.

203. Mr. Higgins (Mayo) asked the Minister for Health and Children if, arising from a meeting between his Department and legal representatives of persons considering legal action against the major tobacco companies, his Department is prepared to consider financial assistance for the bringing of these cases; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [14107/98]

Minister for Health and Children (Mr. Cowen): I am advised that there are a number of cases being brought against the tobacco industry by law firms on behalf of a large number of clients. I have already advised the Dáil that I do not consider it the best use of public funds to provide financial assistance for each individual case taken through individual firms of solicitors. However, I am looking at other ways in which the public interest might best be served in this matter.
