Dáil Éireann - Volume 492 - 09 June, 1998
Written Answers. - Persons in Custody.
Mr. Stanton Mr. Stanton
211. Mr. Stanton asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform if he will provide details of all cases of detention and imprisonment under his remit; the number of persons incarcerated in each category; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [13525/98]
Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform (Mr. O'Donoghue) John O'Donoghue
Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform (Mr. O'Donoghue): I assume the Deputy is referring to persons in custody in penal institutions. On Friday 5 June 1998 there were a total of 2,593 persons in custody made up of persons serving sentences of imprisonment or of detention, and-or on remand. However, records are not maintained is a fashion which would allow the number of persons in custody in each category to be easily determined. To do so would require the expenditure of a disproportionate amount of scarce staff time to an extent that could not be justified at present.
