Mr. McGahon Mr. McGahon
132. Mr. McGahon asked the Minister for Defence the amount Zambia was billed for the cost of training each of the military cadets who graduated in 1997; and whether those costs were fair and reasonable in view of the relative poverty of the country and the fact that it is one of the major recipients of our aid programme. [9078/98]
Minister for Defence (Mr. M. Smith) Michael Smith
Minister for Defence (Mr. M. Smith): Ten Zambian army cadets received training at the Military College, Curragh Camp, between 2 October 1995 and 7 July 1997. The total cost was IR £24,300 per person for the 21 month period which included instruction, training, accommodation and uniform clothing.
Five groups of Zambian cadets have been trained in Ireland since 1967. These cadets have been accepted for training following requests by the Zambian Government which undertook to pay the costs involved.
