Written Answers. - Acute Hospital Accommodation.

471. Ms Shortall asked the Minister for Health and Children the number of patients reckoned to [1317] be inappropriately placed in acute hospital beds in each health board area. [9436/98]

Minister for Health and Children (Mr. Cowen): The question of whether patients are appropriately occupying acute hospital beds is a matter of clinical judgment and individual patient circumstances. My Department does not routinely collect national data on this matter, therefore, I have asked the health boards and voluntary hospitals in all health board areas to assess the situation in their organisations and I will communicate with the Deputy as soon as the information is available.
