64. Mr. G. Reynolds asked the Taoiseach the tonnage of timber processed within the State in each of the years from 1993 to 1997. [3807/98]

The Taoiseach: Data for the available years are shown in the table. The data have been supplied by firms in terms of cubic metres rather than tonnes. The industrial sectors NACE 20.10 and 20.20 cover the following activities: sawmilling and planing of wood; impregnation of wood; manufacture of veneer sheets; manufacture of plywood and manufacture of laminboard, particle board, fibre board and other panels and boards.

The quantities of timber* processed and sold by these sectors for the years 1993-1995 are as follows:

*Excluding fuel wood, sawdust and other wood waste by products.

It is assumed that the Deputy is interested in the primary processing of timber. Downstream activities, for example, furniture manufacture etc., are not included in the figures given.
