Written Answers. - Psychiatric Care.

123. Mr. Creed asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform if he will make [1268] arrangements to investigate the circumstances surrounding the detention of a person (details supplied); if he is satisfied that the conditions are appropriate for this juvenile; if the person has been assessed by psychiatric service; and, if so, if the prison psychiatric service is satisfied that the offender is being detained in surroundings suitable to his age and medical condition. [2753/98]

Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform (Mr. O'Donoghue): I am aware of the person to whom the Deputy refers, but it is long-standing practice not to comment in detail on the case of an individual prisoner and I do not propose to make an exception to that practice in this instance. I can assure the Deputy, however, that the person concerned remains under the direct care of the psychiatric services in conditions which are appropriate to his medical needs.
