Mitchell asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government if a person (details supplied) is entitled to assistance to have central heating installed; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [1266/98] Minister of State at the Department of the Environment and Local Government (Mr. Molloy) Minister of State at the Department of the Environment and Local Government (Mr. Molloy) Minister of State at the Department of the Environment and Local Government (Mr. Molloy): There are no grants available from my Department for installing central heating in a house. A local authority may make a grant under the disabled persons grants scheme for necessary adaptation works to a house to render it more suitable for accommodation of a disabled person. It is a matter in individual cases for local authorities to determine eligibility for a grant and the type of works for which a grant may be given. Central heating may be included as part of such adaptation works and, in circumstances where a proposed central heating system extends beyond the accommodation for the disabled person, an apportionment of the cost is made.
