Written Answers. - Pupil-Teacher Ratio.

[791] 398. Mr. Haughey asked the Minister for Education and Science the plans, if any, he has to reduce the pupil to teacher ratio in secondary schools; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [20515/97]

Minister for Education and Science (Mr. Martin): I am sure the Deputy will appreciate that there are many competing demands for increased funding in all sectors of education. These demands are considered within the overall budgetary constraints. I can assure the Deputy that the question of providing additional teaching resources to second level schools through the reduction of the pupil teacher ratio will be considered in this context.
