239. Mr. Naughten asked the Minister for Agriculture and Food the plans, if any, he has to provide assistance, financial or otherwise, to small abattoir owners to fully implement EU Directive 91/497; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [19113/97]

Minister for Agriculture and Food (Mr. Walsh): I have no plans at present to introduce national aid for modernising small abattoirs. The Irish Butchers Association has made a submission on me on this and other matters and I am meeting the association this afternoon to discuss their concerns.
