183. Mr. Haughey asked the Minister for Agriculture and Food if he will introduce legislation which would ensure clear labelling of all genetically engineered foods; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [14394/97]

Minister for Agriculture and Food (Mr. Walsh): Foods and food ingredients which have been subject to genetic engineering fall within the scope of Article 1.2 of the European Parliament and Council Regulation (EC) No. 258/97 concerning novel foods and novel food ingredients. My colleague, the Minister for Health and Children, has responsibility for the implementation of this regulation, including labelling aspects, in Ireland.
