128. Mr. Callely asked the Minister for Justice if her attention has been drawn to the public concern at the increase in petty crime, particularly in the Dublin Metropolitan Area; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [9295/97]

Minister for Justice (Mrs. Owen): It is not clear what the Deputy means by petty crime. I understand that provisional figures for the first two months of 1997 show that there has been a decrease in the number of indictable offences recorded in the Dublin Metropolitan Area as compared to the corresponding period in 1996.
