176. Mr. N. Treacy asked the Minister for Justice the proposals, if any, the Government has to devolve more responsibility and autonomy to An Garda Síochána; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [6271/97]

Minister for Justice (Mrs. Owen): I propose to take Questions Nos. 176 and 184 together.

The Deputy will be aware of the SMI steering group appointed by the Government to conduct a strategic management review of the Garda Síochána. The questions raised by the Deputy are issues which I understand are under consideration by the steering group who will be reporting soon on its conclusions. It would be inappropriate for me to comment on the matter in advance of the report of the steering group and its consideration by Government.
