14. Mr. J. Walsh asked the Minister for Social Welfare if he has received the report of the consultants who are reviewing the national fuel scheme; if he will publish the report; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [5720/97]

Minister for Social Welfare (Proinsias De Rossa): Independent consultants were engaged by my Department to carry out a review of the national fuel scheme to ensure that the scheme is operating effectively and equitably and to assist my Department in the operation and future planning of the scheme.

A draft of the consultant's report was received a short time ago and circulated within my Department for observations. These observations have been forwarded to the consultants who are in the process of finalising the report. I expect to receive the final version of the report in the coming weeks.

Copies of the final report will be placed in the Oireachtas Library. A number of copies will be made available to interested parties and Deputies.
