86. Mr. Martin asked the Minister for Justice the number of prosecutions which were brought against parties for possession of syringes under Section 9 (5) of the Firearms and Offensive Weapons Act, 1990, in each of the years since the introduction of the act. [5452/97]

Minister for Justice (Mrs. Owen): I am informed by the Garda authorities that available information shows that proceedings were instituted under Section 9 (5) of the Firearms and Offensive Weapons Act, 1990, in one case in the period 1994-95 where a syringe is recorded as the weapon used — statistics on summary proceedings under the Act and cases dealt with on indictment prior to 1994 are not readily available.

Statistics for 1996 are not yet available.
