Written Answers - Acceptance of Gifts.

112. Mr. Callely asked the Minister for Equality and Law Reform the gifts he accepted since his appointment to Government; if he will give details of the gifts and their monetary value; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [5294/97]

Minister for Equality and Law Reform (Mr. Taylor): The practice has been for members of the Government to accept relatively inexpensive gifts to mark occasions such as visits, official openings, etc. and not to accept expensive gifts. It has not been the practice to describe items presented.

The Deputy may be assured, however, that I did not receive items in the periods in question which would be in excess of the threshold set in the Ethics in Public Office Act, 1995.

113. Mr. Callely asked the Minister for Arts, Culture and the Gaeltacht the gifts he accepted since his appointment to Government; if he will give details of the gifts and their monetary value; [1064] and if he will make a statement on the matter. [5295/97]

Minister for Arts, Culture and the Gaeltacht (Mr. M. Higgins): The practice has been for members of the Government to accept relatively inexpensive gifts to mark occasions such as visits, official openings, etc., and not to accept expensive gifts. It has not been the practice to describe such gifts, which might possibly entail a breach of courtesy to those who presented the items in question.

The Deputy may be assured, however, that I did not receive items in the period in question which would be in excess of the threshold set in the Ethics in Public Office Act, 1995.
